1. Are You an Emotional Eater?

If you are an emotional eater, the holidays and the stress that comes with them can trigger overeating if you are not careful. It is not always about the food. For some people, just being with family during the holidays is enough to cause them to overeat. If your family causes you stress and anxiety, try limiting the time you spend with them—or consider announcing a text-free day (or afternoon) occasionally to give yourself a break from upsetting family interactions via your smartphone. Try planning something enjoyable after a family gathering so you have something positive to look forward to. Keeping busy, especially with nonfood activities before the holidays, can also be a helpful way to not build up a lot of anticipation about how it’s going to go.

2. Take a holiday hall pass— on a spoon

Give yourself permission to eat anything you want, in small portions, as long as you start filling up on healthy food first. Get a plate and one spoon for each dish you want to try. Scoop one spoonful of each dish and place the full spoon on the plate. As you try each spoonful? Drink three gulps of water in between.

3. No starving allowed

It slows down your metabolism. Don’t make a mistake many people make around the holiday season: Don’t starve yourself all day in anticipation of eating a holiday meal or party food. Eat normally and have a small snack before you go to keep your hunger under control.

4. Skip the booze

it’s not worth it and it lowers your willpower and self-control. It’s easy to let your hair down like Don Lemon on New Year's Eve, except Don didn’t just invest in a Lamborghini body. Stay aware of the calories you drink— egg nog calories are rude and yummy and sneaky sneaky!

5. Get a smaller plate

Your stomach is legit the size of your fist. We load up the foodage and make it fit but realistically? Just get a smaller plate— your body doesn’t want to work that hard processing all of that food late in the day anyways.

Bonus:

Drink water like its going out of style. Flush out the low vibrations, high salt, and carbs with more water.
